Common Ground, More Than Great Music Officials announce that in addition to the national talent that will be headed to Lansing this summer; there are plenty of things to do beyond the music. Common Ground is a growing event that encompasses not only the arts, but fun, family-oriented activities as well. Included are the following:
M.A.S.K.S. Skate Event The Common Ground Music Festival and Modern Skate & Surf proudly announce the return of the fourth annual Michigan Amateur Skate Kontest Series at Ranney Park on Saturday, July 16th and on Sunday, July 17th. Ranney Park is located next to Frandor Shopping Center at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Morgan Lane. M.A.S.K.S. is a series of amateur skateboard and inline skate contests that culminates in the crowning of the amateur champion in each category in the state of Michigan. The event includes competitions of half pipe, street and bowl contests. Categories include 13 and under, 14 - 19 and 20 & over. There is a $10 entry fee for all participants. The skateboard contest registration begins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, the 16th of July; the contest will begin at 1:00 p.m. The inline skate contest registration begins at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, the 17th of July; the contest will begin at 1:00 p.m. New this year, the M.A.S.K.S. Skate Event will be a qualifier for the first annual Xtreme Challenge, to be held at the Pontiac Silverdome later this summer. Xtreme Challenge is a full weekend of video game and live sporting competitions accompanied by live performances from some of the biggest artists in music. Xtreme Challenge will offer skaters a competition in a skate structure the size of a hockey rink, as well as demonstrations and performances by nationally recognized skaters.
Bibo! Ultimate 4 on 4 Soccer Tournament The Common Ground Music Festival and the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) will be bringing the third annual soccer tournament, in coordination with SoccerZone, on July 9th & 10th to the Hope Soccer Complex in Lansing. Common Ground Flag Football 5 on 5 Tournament New to the festival this year, is the Common Ground Flag Football Tournament which will be held at SoccerZone on Saturday, July 16th. The American Flag Football Association has elected Lansing for a new 5 on 5 adult (16 or older) male tournament. All participating teams are guaranteed at least three games; the first two games will be round robin and will then be followed by a single elimination format. Contact Brian Fuller at SoccerZone for team enrollment. The deadline is July 14th and the cost per team is $150.
Grand Hole-In-One/Putt-Fore-A-Car Returning for the sixth year, the Grand Hole-In-One golf event is a chipping challenge for all ages. Step up to the banks of the Grand River, choose your club and take a shot! The cost to participate is: 3 shots for $5.00; 8 shots for $10; 20 shots for $20.00. Finalists can win a car, cash or various other prizes. Also returning for its sixth year is the Putt-Fore-A-Car golf event. A special 55-foot putting surface, two feet tall and four feet wide, will challenge your putting prowess. Each night, there will be one finalist putting for a General Motors car. The cost to participate is again: 3 shots for $5.00; 8 shots for $10; 20 shots for $20.00. Check these golf events out during the week of the festival, July 11th – July 17th.
Foster, Swift, Collins & Smith Playground Area Other family fun entertainment that will be happening throughout the week of the festival includes the following: Mural, Face Painting, Rock Wall, Inflatables, Maze, Sandbox, Impression 5 Science Center Slime Machine, Rondini, Nature Discovery, Home Depot Workshop, Caricatures and much, much more! The Common Ground Music Festival will once again be a multi-day celebration including nightly concerts, a variety of fun family entertainment and an assortment of food vendors.
